• re-appearance annually as a seasonal influenza virus
• co-circulation with human seasonal and avian influenza viruses (e.g. H5N1) may lead to reassortment between any of these viruses 
• change of virulence through mutation or reassortment
• acquisition of antiviral resistance through mutation or reassortment
• introduction of a novel pandemic virus from the animal world
